VRQ Level 3 – Principles and Practices of Sustainable Waste Management

(Accredited by Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board)

The prime audience for this Course is individuals working in the process industry (or allied industries), who may or may not be graduates, but who are seeking to transfer into the waste management industry to work at supervisory or junior management level and need to gain a detailed understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable waste management.

The taught section of the course has been split into 6 units, each covering a different aspect of waste:

  • Understand their role in Sustainable Development.
  • Appreciate the importance of taking individual responsibility and action to ensure the local community and the world is a better place and make informed decisions about their actions and the impacts they have.
  • Influence the actions and impacts of other individuals and organisations.
  • Become active participants in Sustainable Development.

Hazardous Waste Regulations

Almost all businesses will produce some hazardous waste, for example fluorescent tubes or computer monitors. Businesses must ensure that their hazardous waste is dealt with appropriately.

This course provides an overview of the wastes which are classified as hazardous and will explain the roles and responsibilities of businesses in relation to regulations. Participants will be provided with current practical advice on how they can comply with the regulations. By the end of the course participants will have a working knowledge of the legislation and guidance governing the coding and classification of hazardous wastes.

Site Waste Management Plans

Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) are mandatory in England for construction projects over £300,000 but are now increasingly becoming a requirement for clients across the UK. SWMPs provide a platform for improving resource efficiency throughout the supply chain, often with resultant positive cost benefits.

This course will provide an introduction to site waste management plans and provide participants with the knowledge required for the preparation of plans. Participants will also be able to identify opportunities for reduction, reuse or recycling of C&D waste streams and will understand their roles and responsibilities as well as that of others.

Duty of Care

All businesses produce waste and all waste produced by businesses is regulated by waste laws.  Businesses have a legal responsibility to ensure that they produce, store, transport and dispose of their business waste without harming the environment. This responsibility is known as the ‘Duty of Care’.  If the business produces any type of controlled waste they are required to comply with ‘Duty of Care’ Regulations.  Most types of business waste are classed as controlled waste including household, commercial and industrial waste.

This course will provide participants with knowledge of the current legislative requirements and what this means in practice for their businesses.  The course will provide practical advice on how to comply with the legislation, for example keeping records and using waste transfer notes.

Introduction to Sustainable Communities

As concerns regarding over consumption and wasted resources become more immediate throughout the globe, more and more people and governments are trying to embrace a new way of thinking and acting about their future. Although the motivation for involvement varies, it often includes the desire to improve the quality of community life, to protect the environment, and to encourage individuals to participate in the decisions that affect them.

This introductory course is targeted towards community and voluntary organisations, community activists or any individual that has an interest in living and working in a more sustainable community.

The course will introduce topics such as waste and resource management, energy efficiency and renewables, sustainable self-build, green procurement and land and water use.

Micro Hydro Training Course

Prior to the development of the National Grid, electrical power for many rural communities was provided from small-scale hydro-electric schemes. As concerns grow over the generation of electrical energy from fossil fuels due to the carbon emissions involved and the dependence on imported energy, the potential of micro-hydro is once again being explored..

This course will provide the skills required to assess the potential of a site for the production of electricity from Micro-Hydro. The course is primarily concerned with systems capable of producing up to 100kW of electrical power from a run-of–river scheme.

Technical, environmental, economic and legislative issues involved in developing a site will be considered as well as the practicalities of installation and the requirements for ongoing maintenance. Practical activities on-site will be complemented by external site visits to working systems.

It is intended that the course will be accredited by BPEC Certification.

Duration: 3 day

Off-Grid Solar Photovoltaic Training Course

While the majority of electrical energy from solar systems is generated by grid-connected systems, there are applications where off-grid or stand-alone photovoltaic systems can be cost-effective means of electrical generation. The potential of solar photovoltaic systems in such applications will be explored.

This course is primarily intended for electricians who have already achieved a qualification in grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems and who wish to extend their knowledge into off-grid systems.

Practical activities on working systems will support learning of the system principles and typologies that are employed in integrating off-grid PV with other renewable and non-renewable sources of energy.

It is intended that the course will be accredited by BPEC Certification.
